Jacob and Esau reunite peacefully, then Jacob settles in Succoth and Shechem, building a house and an altar.
Jacob first sees Esau returning with 400 men and bows seven times, while Esau rushes to embrace him; they weep and exchange gifts, signifying reconciliation. Jacob’s family—Leah, Rachel, Joseph, the handmaids and their children—arrange themselves in an order that reflects their status. After the reunion, Jacob and Esau discuss travel, with Esau expressing willingness to accompany Jacob to Seir, but ultimately Jacob returns alone. Jacob then journeys to Succoth, where he builds a house and shelters for his cattle, naming the place Succoth. Continuing northward, he arrives at Shalem in the land of Shechem, purchases a field from Hamor’s children, and erects an altar he calls EleloheIsrael, establishing a site of worship.
