God tests Abraham’s faith by commanding him to sacrifice Isaac, but stops him at the last moment, rewarding his obedience with a promise of abundance and blessing for his descendants.
In Genesis 22, God calls Abraham to offer his beloved son Isaac as a burnt offering on Mount Moriah. Abraham obediently prepares the sacrifice, bringing wood, fire, and a knife, and invites Isaac to participate. As they reach the appointed site, Abraham raises the knife to kill Isaac, only to be halted by the angel of the LORD, who declares Abraham has proven his fear of God by not withholding his son. A ram caught in a thicket becomes the substitute offering, and the place is named Jehovahjireh, meaning "The LORD will provide." The angel reiterates God’s covenant, promising abundant blessings, many descendants, and that all nations will be blessed through Abraham’s seed. Abraham then returns to Beersheba, and the chapter concludes with a genealogy of Abraham’s brother Nahor’s descendants.
