The children of Reuben and Gad petition Moses for the land east of the Jordan, demanding it as inheritance for their cattle and families, and Moses conditions their possession on their participation in Israel’s war against Canaan.
In Numbers 32, the Reubenites and Gadites, possessing vast herds, desire to settle in the fertile lands of Gilead and adjacent regions, so they petition Moses and the Israelite leaders for possession of the territory. Moses rebukes them, recalling the generation that warned Israel away from the Promised Land, and reminds them that their fathers failed to follow God, resulting in a forty‑year wandering. The tribes agree to join the Israelites in battle before the Jordan; in return Moses promises them the land east of the Jordan. He then gives detailed allotments, granting the children of Gad, Reuben, and half of Manasseh the kingdoms of Sihon and Og and the cities of Gilead. The tribes build fortified cities and establish sheepfolds, naming many towns after their leaders. The chapter ends with the successful conquest of the Amorites and the formal allocation of the land to the designated tribes.
