The death of Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu for offering forbidden fire leads Moses to give Aaron and his surviving sons strict rules about conduct and offerings, emphasizing holiness and proper procedure.
In Leviticus 10, Nadab and Abihu, Aaron’s sons, use a censer with fire and incense not commanded by God, and the Lord’s fire consumes them. Moses instructs Aaron to remove his sons from the camp, to keep their heads uncovered, and warns the elders not to drink wine or strong drink in the tabernacle, establishing a statute for future generations to keep holy and unholy separate. Moses also orders Aaron’s sons Eleazar and Ithamar to consume the remaining meat offering in the holy place, but they fail to do so, resulting in Moses’ frustration. Aaron defends that the sin offering was already offered and questions whether his consumption would have been accepted. Moses, after hearing Aaron, is satisfied and the chapter ends with the prescribed laws for the priests’ conduct and offerings.
