Joshua 8

35 verses

TL;DR

Joshua leads Israel in a surprise ambush against Ai, capturing and destroying the city with divine aid.

Summary

Joshua, reassured by God, plans a night ambush behind Ai and lifts a spear toward the city, provoking the Ai king to attack. Israel feigns retreat, luring the Ai forces into the ambush, where the Israelites seize Ai and burn it. The King of Ai is captured alive and later hanged. Israel exhausts all inhabitants, taking only cattle and spoils. Afterwards Joshua builds an altar of stones on Mount Ebal, writes the law of Moses on the stones, and gathers the entire nation to read the law, fulfilling Moses’s command.
