Jesus comforts his disciples, explains his relationship with the Father, and promises the Holy Spirit, urging faith and obedience.
In this chapter Jesus begins by soothing his disciples’ anxieties, telling them not to be troubled. He speaks of many mansions in the Father’s house and the promise that he will go and prepare a place for them. He emphasizes that he is the way, truth, and life, and that no one comes to the Father except through him. Jesus clarifies his unity with the Father and encourages belief in his words and works. He announces that whatever is asked in his name will be done, and that love for him is shown by keeping his commandments. He promises another Comforter—the Holy Ghost—to stay with the disciples forever. He offers his peace, distinct from the world’s, and reminds them that he will return. He encourages them to rejoice in his departure, stressing his love for the Father and the promise of future revelation.
