Elijah confronts Ahaziah’s reliance on Baalzebub, delivers a divine judgment that the king will die, and the prophet is shown the power of God through fire from heaven.
After King Ahaziah of Israel falls ill, he sends messengers to inquire of Baalzebub, the god of Ekron, reflecting Israel’s lack of faith in the Lord. The angel of the LORD commands Elijah to meet the messengers and deliver a prophetic judgment that Ahaziah will die because he seeks counsel outside Israel’s God. Elijah confronts three captains sent by the king; each is consumed by a fiery judgment from heaven, illustrating the seriousness of the king’s disobedience. The angel then instructs Elijah to go down with the king; upon delivering the message, Ahaziah dies as promised. The chapter concludes by noting Jehoram’s succession as king of Judah and referencing the chronicles of Israel’s kings.
