2 Chronicles 34

33 verses

TL;DR

Josiah, a youthful king, purges idolatry, rebuilds the temple, discovers the Book of the Law, receives Huldah’s prophetic oracle, renews the covenant, and institutes enduring reforms.

Summary

Josiah began his reign at eight, and in his early years he zealously removed idols and high‑place worship from Judah and Jerusalem, destroying altars, groves, and images. In the eighteenth year he commissioned repairs to the temple and gathered funds from the remnant of Israel, during which the high priest Hilkiah found the Book of the Law. Shaphan the scribe read the book to Josiah, who wept and humbled himself, prompting the king to seek the LORD’s counsel. They consulted the prophetess Huldah, who delivered a message of impending judgment and assurance of the king’s salvation because of his contrition. The king read the covenant aloud to all citizens, vowed to keep its statutes, and united Judah and Jerusalem in covenant worship. Josiah then removed all remaining abominations, ensuring that his people would continue to serve the LORD.
