Jehoiada leads a covenantal purge of Judah, anoints Joash as king, and eliminates the high‑king Athaliah and Baal worship, restoring worship of the LORD.
In 2 Chronicles 23, Jehoiada the priest gathers Judah’s leaders and levies a covenant with the king in the Temple. He assigns the Levites to guard the palace, the priests to guard the Temple, and the people to stay outside. The king’s son is anointed, crowned, and declared king, while Jehoiada delivers the royal insignia to the Levites. Athaliah, queen‑mother, attempts to seize power, but Jehoiada orchestrates her execution outside the Temple. The people then demolish Baal’s altar and restore David’s priestly offices, solidifying the covenant. The chapter ends with peace and jubilation after Athaliah’s death.
