2 Chronicles 22

12 verses

TL;DR

Ahaziah, a king who followed the wicked ways of Ahab, reigned briefly, was killed in battle, and was then eliminated by his own mother Athaliah, who tried to destroy the Davidic line before Joash was secretly hidden and later restored.

Summary

Ahaziah, the youngest son of King Jehoram, became king of Judah after a violent purge of his older brothers. He inherited his mother's wicked counsel and continued the corrupt practices of the house of Ahab. Ahaziah joined his uncle Jehoram of Israel in a war against the Syrian king Hazael, where he was wounded and later died in battle. Jehu, anointed to destroy Ahab’s house, killed Ahaziah and other Judah princes. Athaliah, fearing the loss of her power, massacred the royal heirs, but her daughter Jehoshabeath secretly rescued the young Joash and hid him for six years until she could secure his return to the throne. The chapter concludes with the regency of Athaliah over Judah and the hidden restoration of the Davidic line.
