David receives a hostile request from the wealthy but rude Nabal, but Abigail intervenes wisely, averting violence, causing Nabal's downfall, and ultimately leading to Abigail's marriage to David.
After Samuel’s death, David, in the wilderness, hears of Nabal’s abundant flocks in Carmel. He sends messengers to request provisions for his men, but Nabal rejects them with disdain, offering no help. Abigail, Nabal’s intelligent wife, secretly brings generous gifts and pleads with David, warning him against attacking Nabal. David accepts her counsel, spares Nabal, and thanks Abigail. The next day, Nabal’s heart hardens and he dies, and David takes Abigail as his wife, while also marrying Ahinoam. The chapter illustrates wisdom, mercy, and divine retribution.
